Signals
An ideal customer profile, or ICP, is the definition of the companies a business is best positioned to serve, expressed as firmographic criteria such as industry, size, ownership structure, and geography. An ICP describes the account, not the individual buyer inside it, which is what separates it from a persona.
An ICP is the first filter in signal-based outbound and the cheapest one to apply. A buying signal at a company outside the profile is not a lead; it is noise that happens to be well timed. Filtering on fit before filtering on event is what keeps a signal queue short enough for a human to review.
The common failure is writing an ICP that is aspirational rather than observed. A profile built from the deals a firm actually won tends to be narrower, and more useful, than one built from the deals it would like to win. Ownership structure in particular is frequently missing: a PE-backed company and an owner-operated one of the same size behave differently, buy on different timelines, and answer to different people.
ICP and signal work as a pair. The profile says which companies are worth approaching; the signal says when. Neither is sufficient alone, which is why a list-based campaign with a good ICP still converts poorly, and why a well-timed message to a company that will never buy converts not at all.
PulsePoint Strategic turns signals like these into timed, approved outreach. See how on the signal intelligence page, or estimate the impact with the ROI calculator.
